“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD.”
Isa.55.8
Discussion
This is a verse widely quoted in the Christian community. It is usually quoted to mean that God thinks differently and far higher than our thinking, and likewise his ways are far different and higher than ours. This implies a hopelessness of our thoughts and ways comparative to God's thoughts and ways. This conclusion can only be drawn from poor bible study or poor bible teaching. A simple look at the preceding verse lets you know who the scripture here is speaking to. Isa.55.7; "Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon." Did you notice He chastised the WICKED concerning their ways, and the UNRIGHTEOUS MAN concerning his thoughts. Thus, the wicked person and the unrighteous person acted and thought in ways that displeased God. Then He follows up with; "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways.." Therefore, God is saying to the wicked and the unrighteous folks; “I'm unhappy with you because your thoughts and your ways are contrary to my thoughts and my ways”. He was chastising man for his wrong thoughts and ways. His desire is that His people think His thoughts and walk in His ways. His thoughts and His ways are revealed in the person of Jesus Christ as He is revealed in the scriptures (Col 1:15, HEB 1:3). This is why now, the bible says we have the mind of Christ (1Cor 2:16). The scriptures instruct us to ensure our minds and thoughts at all times are in alignment with Christ's; Phil.2.5; "Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:." Therefore, from now on, know that in Christ your mind and nature are of God. Your thoughts and your ways are now colonized by His thoughts and His ways. As you daily renew your mind by studying and meditating on His word, it'll no longer be about your thoughts and your desires, it'll be about His thoughts and His ways. This is where perfect peace dwells (Isa.26.3). You're not the wicked, neither are you the unrighteous. Make sure to always know God's word concerning you. Your daily life becomes more eternally productive if you'd live everyday knowing you're thinking God's thoughts and living in His ways. Shalom Uvracha!
