Raw gold has to be smelted in the furnace to make it pure and suitable for honourable use. It gets better by purification and it gets purer by fire. Raw silver endures extreme temperatures in a crucible in order for it to become usable by the end users and highly profitable to the sellers. Silver gets better when it's purer, and it gets purer by fire. The bible is saying to us that we are as gold and as silver; we become better when we're purer, and we get purer by fire. So, Gold is refined by the refiner's furnace; silver is refined by the refiner's furnace; and we are refined when God tries our hearts. How does God try our hearts? Heb.4.12; "For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart." The word of God. How does God try our hearts? Jas.1.2-3; "My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience." Read 1Pet.1.7; "That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ:"

So, we see that the refining pot for a child of God is (1) The word of God (2) Trials. Thus, we get better when we get purer; we get purer when we give ourselves to the hearing of God's word and when we go through trials. The one who hardly listens to the word of God will remain largely impure in conduct. A little trial will expose such a person's carnality. The purer we are, the more fit we become for the master's use; 2Tim.2.19-21; "...And, Let everyone that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity. But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth; and some to honour, and some to dishonour. If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master's use, and prepared unto every good work." Child of God, purge yourself from all impurity by surrendering yourself to the teaching of God's word and rejoice when you go through trials of your faith.
