“Don't try to get rich by extortion or robbery. And if your wealth increases, don't make it the center of your life. NLT”
Ps.62.10
Discussion
Read it again; Ps.62.10; "Don't try to get rich by extortion or robbery. And if your wealth increases, don't make it the center of your life." Some foolish things people do in this world; like making their money and material possessions the center of their lives and the focus of all their pursuits. Many others talk about their children, spouses or parents in very inappropriate terms; "My air" "my life" "my eternity" "my soul" "I can't live without you"...that's preposterous! Absolutely nothing wrong in expressing intense love for family or deep appreciation for the things you've been blessed with. But there is everything wrong with using God-specific adoration terminologies for people or things. No one is your life but Christ (Col 3:4). If we don't slow down on these exaggerations, we'll soon have people referring to their spouses as "my bread of life". To make it worse, you have believers who have elevated their money or pursuit of money to divine levels. This is not healthy at all.
Money and material possessions are fleeting and do not have the power to impart lasting peace in man’s heart. The more desperately you pursue them, the more you lose your true life. Prov.23.5; "Wilt thou set thine eyes upon that which is not? for riches certainly make themselves wings; they fly away as an eagle toward heaven." This is true. Money comes and money goes, but eternal life is forever. Set your affection on that which is eternal (Col.3.1-2). Should you have money and expensive things? Absolutely yes, if you can. But in all your dealings, live in godliness and contentment, not godlessness and greed. To be content and godly is true living. 1Tim.6.6; "But godliness with contentment is great gain." But if you choose to disregard the warning of the scriptures, and pursue riches with all your might; know that this path is a trap with much temptation and loss of eternal values (Read 1Tim.6.9). Therefore, be wealthy; be influential; be famous, but with all your heart, ensure that Jesus Christ and His kingdom remain the center of your life.
